I recieved an email today saying that the reggae band ROOTZUNDERGROUND was giving away a full album free. I was amazed and excited i quickly went to the website and downloaded the album…..a good quality free live album… It made me wonder about a number of things; the thinking behind the strategy and the fact that it would certainly reep alot of benifits for the group since exposing your music to as many people as possible was most defintely something to do and especially with the internet it is so esay. I started to wonder as well about other artist who wanted to promote their work and if they could “afford” to do it for free or if they even considered the benifits of promoting and giving away some music for free. There has been many discussions around the issue of downloading music for free the changing business model for the artist and the shift away from making money through album sales and more merchandising and events. I congratulate Rootz Underground on this move and i will be watching closely to see how this strategy could possible pay off for them.
